TAEASS502Design and Develop Assessment Toolscovers the skills and knowledge required to design and develop assessment tools used to guide the collection of quality evidence, including their application in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment.

The recent amendments to theStandards for RTOs 2015and this ministerial release have changed the minimum qualifications required of trainers and assessors within the vocational education and training sector. From1 July 2019, training and assessment must only be delivered by persons who have either:

  • The superseded TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and AssessmentPLUSunit TAEASS502/TAEASS502A/TAEASS502B Design and develop assessment tools (i.e., this unit)PLUSunit TAELLN411/TAELLN401A Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills; or
  • TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment; or
  • A diploma or higher level qualification in adult education.

    Duration and Workload Students undertaking training have six months from their enrolment date to complete their studies and submit all assessment workbooks for this course. RPL candidates have six months from their enrolment date to complete their RPL interview and submit all required evidence. (Students may extend the duration of their enrolment on a month-by-month basis – extra fees apply as detailed in our schedule of fees.) Students may complete and submit their assessment workbooks at any time during their enrolment.
    The Course Workload & Assessment table available in the Units Tab above summarises the anticipated student workload as per our Training and Assessment Strategy for this qualification. This represents the notional duration of all activities required for the achievement of the learning outcomes. These figures represent a combination of all formal training delivered in this course (however students are not obligated to avail themselves of all offered training and resources), and the anticipated self-study and assessment workload for a student who has no knowledge or skills in any of the content of the delivered units.
    Assessment Turnaround The turnaround time for assessment submissions received by Plenty Training is approximately 20 working days from the date it is received. This time frame can vary depending on the number of assessment submissions being received at any given time. Once a student has been deemed competent in all units they will be issued with their qualification within 30 calendar days.
    Assessment All students receive a learner's guide and assessment workbooks. You can either work through the assessment workbooks on your computer or complete a printed version by hand.
    • Class - The trainer will take students through learning material in class as well as some assessment, but the majority of assessment will be completed in the student's own time.
    • Virtual - Students will access their live and recorded class online, and complete assessment at their own pace.
    • RPL - Students will complete the RPL form / kit and supply any required evidence.
    Equipment Requirements All students will require access to a computer (with Adobe Reader and Microsoft Word installed) and a reliable Internet connection. Participants may also require a skype-style headset (for virtual classes), access to a video and/or audio recording device (such as a webcam or smart phone) to record themselves undertaking certain assessment activities (when required).
    Student Authenticity We are obliged under the Standards for RTOs 2015 to ensure the authenticity of our students' submitted assessment work. Students are required to:
    • A. Present a valid form of government-issued photo identification card (such as a driver's license) for our trainer to review at the commencement of all face-to-face classes;
    • B. Include a paper or scanned copy of your government-issued photo identification when submitting any video recording of you undertaking an assessment task remotely; and
    • C. Provide us with your Unique Student Identifier (USI)

    Our three-day iClass+ workshop provides students with the ability to attend three-days of online interactive training led by one of our experienced trainers via the Adobe Connect platform. During this three-day workshop unit theory will be re-capped and significant time will be dedicated to completing assessment tasks. Students will have the chance to develop and trial two assessment tools over the three-day period. The remaining assessment tool will be developed outside of the classroom in the student's own time along with the short answer questions.


    Interactive two-dayiClass+ program($395):
    Our two-day iClass+ workshop provides students with the ability to attend two-days of online interactive training led by one of our experienced trainers via the Adobe Connect platform. Students will have the chance to develop and trial one assessment tool over the two-day period. The two remaining assessment tools will be developed outside of the classroom in the student's own time along with the short answer questions. Students have the opportunity to upgrade to the three-dayiClass+ program at a later date if they wish. Individuals who choose to upgrade will simply attend day three of the three-day program.

    This type of learning environment offers the perfect blend of flexibility and support. Students can attend a full day live session consisting of trainer-led discussions, and participation in group collaboration activities from any location without the cost or hassle of travelling to a particular venue. The only thing needed is a computer with reasonable Internet connection, webcam, and audio functionality. Unit theory will be covered via recorded lessons available 24/7. The live sessions are available every month, and students may attend as many sessions as required. This option also includes recorded assessment tutorials and access to weekly Q&A support sessions.

    In addition to the following formal prerequisites we also recommend that students possess the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and / or have experience in the development and/or delivery of training and assessment products and services.

    1. Digital prerequisites – all students:You must have access to a computer (with Adobe Reader and Microsoft Word installed) and a reliable Internet connection to access your learning documentation. You will also require access to a video recording device (such as a webcam or smart phone) to record yourself undertaking certain assessment activities. You must be comfortable using technology to locate information and research topics – for example to find a copy of a regulation using Google –  and in using the main features and functions of digital tools (such as word processing programs, email and printers) to complete work tasks. You must also have an understanding of how to use Microsoft Word and Adobe Reader, be able to download, scan and upload documents, and know how to access online materials.


    2. LLN prerequisites – all students:All students must possess the following language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) abilities:

    A. Learning ability:You must be comfortable using your experience to reflect on ways that variables impact outcomes, and identify future improvements.  You must be self-directing, able to manage your own learning, and be able to plan and balance multiple requirements and meet deadlines.

    B. English reading ability:You must be comfortable reading and interpreting a range of documentation relevant to the subject – this includes organisational policies and procedures and assessment instructions.

    C. English writing ability:You will be required to draft and develop various documents using appropriate format and language for the context and the audience. You must be comfortable writing documents such as formal documents, including instructions, information updates and completing report templates.

    D. English speaking ability:You will be required to participate in verbal exchanges using clear language and appropriate tone and syntax to provide relevant information.  You must be able to use active listening and questioning to elicit views and opinions of others.
